Whether or not you have the funds for a full service design and build, or you DIY and thrift, you can achieve a home you love on any budget! I promise, it is possible! (I’m not saying it’s easy, but you can do it!)
We’ve renovated our home (almost) from top to bottom and here are my tips for creating a home you love that works for your family.
- Set a goal. What do you want your home to be like? How do you want it to function? How do you want it to feel? I want everything to be easy to find, simple to put away, and for anything that stays out to be beautiful. I want it to feel lived in, but always easy to put back together when life gets hectic, because it always does! I love blues and greens, anything old, and lots of contrast and moody hues.
- Be realistic with your skills, time, and budget. Do you hate to DIY? My husband would rather hire everything out, but I quite like to do (some) things myself. However, time is a very limited resource and I try to hire out things that I hate doing or that will take too long to perfect (there’s been a lot of trial and error with this one!).
- Be resourceful. Estate sales, thrift stores, Ebay and Facebook marketplace have tons of great pieces if you know what you’re looking for. Upcycling old things around your home with new paint, reupholstering or small sewing projects can take a piece from old to fabulous.
If you’re in the DC area, I would love to help you create a home you love that functions beautifully for your family.
